CHALLENGE

Almacena faced significant challenges in managing the fragmented coffee market in Africa, characterized by numerous small-scale farmers.

Traditional methods were inefficient and lacked the necessary digital tools for real-time data management, which made transparency and traceability difficult. This inefficiency often led to discrepancies and fraud, as there was no reliable way to track the journey of coffee from farm to consumer. Additionally, farmers frequently received minimal compensation.

Almacena sought a digital solution that could not only enhance traceability and reduce fraud but also support fair trade practices, ensuring that profits were returned to the farmers responsible for cultivation.

!NB This solution needed to provide reliable offline capabilities to overcome connectivity challenges, thereby ensuring continuous operation and data accuracy.

SOLUTION

Celtis developed a multiplatform application (Android/iOS) specifically designed to overcome these challenges. This app enables coffee producers to digitally manage and record data about coffee purchases from farmers. Key features include:

  • Back-Office System: Facilitates user registration and management.
  • Farmer Profiles: Allows collectors to create and manage detailed profiles for each farmer.
  • Smart Papers and Mobile Printing: Implements the digitalization of the entire documentation process with mobile printers for real-time paperwork management in the field.
  • Daily Batches and Purchases: Records details of daily coffee purchases including quantity, quality, and payments.
  • Geolocation: Utilizes GPS to map farms and verify locations.
  • Fraud Detection: Employs algorithms to compare plot data and production estimates, detecting discrepancies and preventing fraud.
  • Offline Mode: Ensures functionality in remote areas with limited internet connectivity.
  • QR Code Identification: Speeds up the identification of farmers and collection of data.
  • Integrated System Feeding: The app feeds data directly into Almacena’s main platform, which controls all other business operations, ensuring seamless integration and real-time data flow.

All documents are digitized with mobile printers and a QR code scanning system for rapid, error-minimized data entry and precise farmer identification in the field.

Utilizes GPS to map farms and verify locations while employing algorithms to compare plot data and production estimates, detecting discrepancies and preventing fraud.

Automatic data synchronization activates when internet access is detected, maintaining continuous data integrity in remote areas.

RESULTS

The Almacena Origin app has significantly enhanced operational efficiency and data accuracy, reducing errors and improving traceability from farmers to end buyers. Building on this success, Almacena plans to use new funding to upgrade its platform technology, expand its team, and enter the U.S. market. Over the next year, the company aims to expand operations in Africa, add South American producers, and enhance services for American buyers.

Launched in 2021, the Almacena platform now includes over 160 cooperatives and 300,000 farmers, serving coffee importers and producers across 11 European countries. The AlmacenaOrigin app is actively used by cooperatives in four African countries, supporting over 18,000 small-scale producers. In under two years, Almacena has become the world’s largest online catalog of African coffee suppliers, operating in 17 markets and representing 12% of Africa’s coffee export capacity. This underscores the app’s critical role in Almacena’s rapid expansion.
